Research aim

Infectious diseases cause 35 percent of deaths worldwide, and are the world's biggest killers of children and young adults. Diseases that can be transmitted between animals and humans, such as bird flu and tuberculosis, can wreak havoc on the health of both organisms. Zoonoses are responsible for more than 2 million human deaths every year. Moreover, it is estimated that 17% of new cancers world- wide will be attributable to infection. Infectious disease research is therefore essential to better understand how an infectious agent multiplies within a living organism in order to prevent, treat, and even cure the diseases caused by these infections. Our institute is a research centre dedicated to academic research of high quality in the fields of bacteriology, virology, and immunity.
